Looks like more consumers were hitting the stores for back-to-school shopping.
New results from Euclid’s retail benchmarks report indicate that there was a steady increase in shopper activity throughout the month. Traffic increased significantly over July due to improved customer confidence coupled with generous promotions from retailers.
Clothing and apparel sales increased 5% year over year while general retail merchandise improved by 3%.

Although sales experienced growth, year-over-year traffic declined by 3%. But it is important to note that traffic increased 7% between July and August 2014, confirming that the back-to-school season encouraged many shoppers to browse and spend more.
The best shopping day of the month was Thursday, August 28, according to Euclid. Outperformance was experienced across all metrics on this day, including shopping duration and engagement.
