Are ATMs And Vending Machines The Future Of Self-Serve Retail?

We all are familiar with ATMs and vending machines. While ATMs are your source for quick cash, we have all turned to vending machines at some point to get a quick snack during the day – whether at work or while on the go. 

Although we’re used to seeing Doritos and Lay’s Potato Chips in most vending machines, some brands are shaking things up by offering hot food, fresh baked books and yes, even cosmetics, in these self-service portals. 

Following are three fun ATMs/vending machines that put a new spin on self-service:

Burrito Box: In January 2014, Box Brands, Inc., opened its first Burrito Box. Over the past month it has taken the Interweb by storm, fueling conversations that it may spread across the West Coast, and nation, at an unprecedented pace. Consumers have access to a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner burritos. A variety of sides, including guacamole, sour cream and hot sauce, also are available to choose from.

Sprinkles Cupcake ATM: Yes, you heard us right…a cupcake ATM. Sprinkles has always been praised for its dedication to creating memorable, high-end experience and oh yeah, delicious, fresh-out-of-the-oven treats! During a keynote at this year’s NRF BIG Show, Sprinkles Founder and pastry chef Candace Nelson discussed how a key mantra for the company is “embrace the crazy.” No wonder the company rolled out cupcake ATMs across the U.S., so consumers can digitally place orders, swipe their credit cards and get a fresh dessert in return. 

Benefit Cosmetics Self-Serve Kiosks: Similar to the vending machine concept, the Benefit Cosmetics kiosks allow consumers to order products they need or forgot to pack for their travels. Stationed in airports across the U.S., the kiosks offer everything from mascara to pore minimizing cream.
