Retailers large and small are seeking to attract new employees as they reckon with worker shortages from the “Great Resignation.” Walmart is promoting a range of employee benefits and touting advancement opportunities as it works to fill more than 50,000 U.S. associate roles. Convenience store retailer Casey’s will host in-person hiring events March 23 and 24 at its more than 2,400 stores to fill 5,000 positions.
Walmart has open positions across multiple segments of the company, including merchants, marketers, pharmacists, optometrists, software engineers, data scientists, distribution, store and club managers. Hiring of the 50,000 new associates will take place by the end of April, according to the Wall Street Journal. Walmart was already on something of a hiring spree: in 2021, the retailer added 5,500 pharmacists and pharmacy managers, 13,000 pharmacy technicians and 4,500 truck drivers across its private fleet. Walmart also is hiring 3,000 associates to support its electric fleet of Walmart InHome delivery vehicles.
Additionally, the retailer is beefing up support for a range of new technologies with a pledge to hire more than 5,000 Walmart Global Tech associates globally. These new associates will join the current 20,000-person team. Walmart is looking for cybersecurity professionals, architects, developers, software engineers, data scientists, data engineers, technical program managers and product managers. The hire of associates to support its technology operations aligns with the addition of technology hubs in Toronto and Atlanta.
In September 2021, Walmart raised its minimum wage $12 per hour, lower than competitors Target and Amazon.
Walmart Promotes Internal Growth and Employee Wellness
At the core of Walmart’s benefits is the health and wellness of associates along with upward mobility to quickly reach higher positions. Walmart noted that:
- 75% of club and field management in the U.S. began as hourly associates;
- Within seven months, many entry-level associates secure positions of more responsibility and higher pay;
- Medical coverage is offered at rates as low as $31.40 per pay period;
- Thrive Global partnership combats worker stress and burnout;
- 100% of college tuition and books payments are offered for associates in stores, clubs, and distribution and fulfillment centers; and
- 401K retirement plans are available to associates from first day of employment.
Through its expanded Live Better U education program, Walmart increased participation of U.S. field-based associates in the program by 44% since July 2021. The program directly supports internal growth in technology, health and wellness, and supply chain. Walmart said that LBU participants are promoted at 2X the rate of other associates.
Casey’s is ‘Here For Good’
Casey’s is preparing to host job candidates during its Here For Good open-interview hiring event March 23-24 at its locations across the 16 states it serves. To attract candidates, Casey’s is promoting itself as a company that offers part- and full-time roles with flexible schedules and growth opportunities.
