Dollar General has launched the popshelf store concept — smaller locations focusing on on-trend seasonal goods, with 95% of items priced at $5 or less. The first two popshelf locations will open in Hendersonville and Clarksville, Tenn. in fall 2020.
Each popshelf will occupy approximately 9,000 square feet and continually refresh merchandise across categories including health and beauty, cleaning supplies and party goods. The stores will carry a combination of limited-time items, seasonal deals and Dollar General private label brands.
Dollar General aims to open 30 popshelf locations by the end of January 2022. The retailer will initially target female customers in suburban communities with a total household annual income ranging from $50,000 to $125,000.
“We are excited to introduce popshelf from a position of strength, further highlighting our innovative spirit and building on our proven track record of store format innovation,” said Todd Vasos, CEO of Dollar General in a statement. “We have leveraged robust consumer insights to create a unique store that we believe will resonate with new customers, while providing Dollar General with even more opportunities for growth in the years ahead.”
