The last major video rental chain in operation, Family Video, is shuttering all of its remaining stores, calling it quits as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on businesses and personal lives alike. In 2020, the company closed almost half of its 500+ stores, ending the year with approximately 250 stores. Now, the impact of COVID-19, “not only in foot traffic, but also in the lack of movie releases, pushed us to the end of an era,” said President Keith Hoogland in a statement published on the company’s website.
The retailer outlived its “Big 3” video rental competitors, Blockbuster, Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video by 10 years.
Family Video stores will remain open as the retailer sells off all itsproducts. The Familyvideo.com website will remain active selling branded merchandise and other products.
