Pet Supplies Plus Debuts Recycling Stations Chainwide

Pet Supplies Plus and sister retailer Wag N’ Wash have introduced in-store recycling stations for pet food packaging chainwide. Customers can drop off any brand of eligible empty plastic pet food and treat bags in designated bins, with the collected waste sent to TerraCycle to be cleaned, sorted and reduced into material that can be remolded to make new recycled products.

The U.S. pet food industry is estimated to produce as much as 300 million pounds of plastic waste annually. Because much of the packaging for these products are made with non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle materials, nearly all pet food packaging is being thrown away rather than recycled. Information on what materials can be recycled is available on the Pet Supplies Plus recycling page and the Wag N’ Wash recycling page.

“We take pride in offering our neighbors a simple and convenient solution to aid in keeping our planet waste-free,” said Chris Rowland, CEO of Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N’ Wash in a statement. “The partnership with TerraCycle is a natural progression as our brands continue to meet the needs of our neighbors and do our part to reduce waste.”

TerraCycle has been working with other retailers on recycling programs to combat waste: Nordstrom debuted its beauty container recycling program in October 2020, and Saks partnered with TerraCycle in November 2022.
