Independent pet goods retailer Pet Supplies Plus has acquired emerging franchise retailer Wag N’ Wash. While the business model for Pet Supplies Plus has focused on services, prescription fulfillment and products for an array of pets, Wag N’ Wash specializes in niche products and services including self-wash options, grooming services and natural food products for dogs along with a selection of cat-focused items. In 2021, Pet Supplies Plus itself was bought by Franchise Group through an approximately $700 million all-cash transaction.

“The acquisition presents mutual benefits for franchisees, neighbors and guests of both brands,” said Chris Rowland, Pet Supplies Plus CEO in a statement. “Pet Supplies Plus neighbors will see no change and will continue to receive the same neighborly service and access to all the same products for all types of pets. Wag N’ Wash guests will continue to enjoy this fun and passionate brand’s specialty offerings, but now will have access to an even greater assortment of products.”

Additionally, Wag N’ Wash will now gain access to increased purchasing power, growth opportunities and placement in regions that are not suitable for the Pet Supplies Plus brand.

Pet Supplies Plus, which already operates more than 600 stores in 39 states, is gaining more than 15 Wag N’ Wash locations through the purchase. While each brand will operate as a separate entity, new and existing franchise owners will be eligible to open a Wag N’ Wash or Pet Supplies Plus-branded store.

“Our owners find joy in serving their communities and pets well,” said Kristen Risby, VP at Wag N’ Wash in a statement. “Now, they can do this with enhanced resources, such as best-in-class fulfillment and assortment though a collective supply chain, back-office functionality and technology, pricing and cost support and more. It’s a win for everyone from the franchise owners to the guests and their pets.”

Wag N’ Wash founders Jef Strauss and Dan Remus will continue to work with the company for at least the next two years.
