Costco to Open Standalone Gas Stations in California and Hawaii

Published: March 23, 2026

Costco will open a 40-pump, 17,000-square-foot gas station in Mission Viejo, Calif. in June, according to USA Today and numerous media reports. It will be the warehouse club operator’s first fuel station without a corresponding store.

Costco’s gasoline, available only to club members, is priced 10 to 30 cents cheaper per gallon than that of other general-access stations, according to U.S. News and World Report. In fact, it’s so popular that some warehouse locations suffer from long lines and parking lot gridlock from people waiting to fill up. As world oil markets react to conflict in the Middle East, gas prices have shot up in recent weeks, so easier availability of less expensive fuel could help this new business model.

The Mission Viejo Planning and Transportation Committee had approved plans for the Costco station in March 2025. Costco also is planning a standalone station in Honolulu in the Kapalama Kai neighborhood. Demolition began in October 2025, and the station is slated to open in 2027.
