Customers Under Pressure

On the company’s Q1 earnings call in May, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner said customers were under pressure, and the retailer planned to invest any tariff refunds it received into price reductions.

“When I look at the consumer, especially here in the U.S., they’re telling us they’re feeling some pressure and they’re looking to Walmart for value,” Furner said on May 21.

That pressure was particularly apparent at the gas pump. In the month of May, for example, the number of fuel gallons sold at Sam’s Club locations increased by 12%, while gallons sold declined by 5% across the broader industry, according to CFO John David Rainey.

“That tells you that customers are coming to us looking for value,” Rainey said on the call. “What’s important to note about that is that a fuel member spends 1.6 times more in the rest of the basket than a non-fuel member. It just shows the importance of engagement, where the importance of leaning into these periods where wallets are stretched and providing these price points for customers that they find attractive.”

Despite macroeconomic pressures, Walmart reported a 7.3% revenue increase to $177.8 billion in Q1 and reiterated its full-year financial outlook. The company did not include any potential IEEPA tariff refunds from its forward-looking guidance during its Q1 call, and said that Walmart’s maximum refund eligibility would represent less than half of 1% of its annual sales.

Inflation and Independence Day Celebrations

An Independence Day cookout cost $73.82 for 10 guests this year, according to the 2026 American Farm Bureau Federation annual market basket survey. That’s an increase of $2.90 from last year, or a 4% increase.

According to a separate survey by grocery savings app Flashfood, 53% of those surveyed said they’re concerned about the cost of hosting summer events because of food prices, and 34% of Americans planning to host this summer said they’ll ask guests to bring something instead of providing all of the food themselves.
