Petco Health and Wellness Company has tapped retail industry veteran Joel Anderson as its new CEO. Anderson will take the reins from R. Michael Mohan, who has been serving as the interim CEO since the departure of Ron Coughlin in March 2024. Anderson was most recently CEO of Five Below, which has appointed Kenneth Bull as its interim President and CEO in the wake of Anderson’s departure.
“Joel is an inspirational leader and a highly experienced retail CEO,” said Glenn Murphy, Executive Chairman of the Petco board of directors in a statement. “Over the course of his impressive career he has demonstrated the ability to build and lead great teams while creating significant shareholder value.”
Petco has made significant changes to its executive suite in recent months. In May 2024 the retailer eliminated the COO role following the departure of Justin Tichy and appointed former Abercrombie & Fitch executive James Roth as its Chief Stores Officer. At that time, Shari White was appointed Interim Chief Merchant while Petco began a search for a permanent replacement.
Five Below has now begun its own search for a permanent leader. Co-founder, Non-Executive Chairman and former CEO Thomas Vellios is assuming the role of Executive Chairman on an interim basis to support Bull and the executive team during the transition and hiring process.
