In a planned leadership transition, Michael Witynski has been named CEO of Dollar Tree. Gary Philbin, the company’s CEO since September 2017, is retiring but will serve as a member of the board through September 23, 2020.
In December, Witynski was promoted from President and COO to a newly created position of Enterprise President. Witynski, who joined Dollar Tree as SVP of Stores in 2010, became COO in 2015. He previously held executive positions at Shaw’s Supermarkets and Supervalu.
“Under Mike’s leadership, we have driven outstanding performance,” said Bob Sasser, Executive Chairman in a statement. “He helped put in place a broad range of operational and talent initiatives to position our company for an even more successful future.”
In the release, Witynski said “We have great momentum; our sales and margins are encouraging; our work to improve the customer experience is driving traffic; and we are now capturing more of the benefits inherent in bringing the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar management teams together under one roof.”
