Oh, Baby! H&M Adds Certified Compostable Newborn Clothes Collection

H&M will debut a new collection of compostable baby clothes that have earned Gold status from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute on April 6, 2023, both in stores and online.

The clothing and accessories in the 15-piece line are made with organic cotton and include a bodysuit made without metal or plastic trims. “Room to grow” details such as adjustable waists, foldable waistbands and cuffs are designed to extend the usable life of the clothing.

Achieving the Cradle to Cradle certification required assessments of each item in the collection across five categories of sustainability performance, including material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship and social fairness. H&M worked closely with supply chain partners to ensure the products are created using materials and chemicals that are safe for people and the planet, with all materials and components, including printing pigments, chosen to ensure the collection is fully recyclable even in a home compost.

“With the launch of this newborn collection, H&M shows that it’s possible today to make products for tomorrow, smartly designed from the start with the principles of longevity and durability in mind,” said Nienke Steen, Global Lead Apparel, Textiles and Footwear at the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute in a statement. “Achieving Cradle to Cradle Certified at Gold level means that the garments in this collection are safe and ready for the circular economy. They present design features that address the problem of unnecessary textile waste typically associated with babies’ fast growth, while also considering circular post-use options.”

The items follow the story of a bumblebee and orange flower growing through Spring on pieces including tie-wrap long-sleeve tops and bodysuits, ruffle-sleeve tops, dungarees, leggings, shorts, hats, blankets and a soft, illustrated baby book.

“We’re so proud to achieve the Gold level certification again with this sweet and cozy collection,” said Sofia Löfstedt, Head of Design and Creative at H&M Kids in a statement. “For us, the whole collection is proof that innovation, style and circularity can be combined wonderfully.”
