Betsey Johnson Returns to Brick-and-Mortar with NYC Pop-Up Hosted by Shopify

Published: March 23, 2026

It’s been a while since shoppers could visit the colorful, boisterous world of Y2K style icon Betsey Johnson in person, but that will change next weekend with the opening of a new takeover of the Shopify SoHo event space at 131 Greene Street in New York City.

From March 27-29, visitors will be treated to an immersive experience inspired by Johnson’s art archive and creative legacy. The shoppable “Betsey World” pop-up won’t aim to recreate the magic of the brand’s previous stores, all 63 of which were shuttered in 2012 when the Steve Madden-owned label filed for bankruptcy. Instead, the three-day experience will invite visitors into a dreamlike interpretation of Betsey’s inner world.

A Pop-Up Designed to be ‘More Magical’ than the Stores that Preceded it

“My favorite part of any store has always been the people — the laughter in the dressing room, friends hyping each other up, those little moments of confidence when you find something you love,” Johnson said in comments shared with Retail TouchPoints. “Retail has changed so much, it can’t just be racks of clothes anymore. I wanted this pop-up to feel even more magical than the memories people have of my stores — a place to play, feel something and fall in love with fashion all over again.”

A series of immersive environments — including an art gallery, locker room, bedroom and “Floral Dreamscape” — will each reflect a different facet of Betsey’s imagination and creative journey. Original artworks will be available for collectors alongside a curated capsule of apparel, handbags, shoes and jewelry inspired by the art itself, allowing every visitor to take home a tangible piece of Betsey’s world.

The pop-up is being operated in partnership with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, with $1 from every purchase in the collection — both at the pop-up and from select styles available online — further advancing the foundation’s mission to end AIDS globally. This marks the brand’s second year of supporting the foundation, with Betsey Johnson having already donated more than $150,000 through the partnership.

“I’m incredibly proud of this continued partnership with the wonderful Betsey Johnson,” said Elton John, Founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation in a statement. “Betsey has always championed individuality and self-expression, and her unwavering commitment to our foundation’s work in the fight against HIV and discrimination means the world to us. Together, we’re building a future where everyone can live authentically and without fear of LGBTQ+ stigma.”
