Alibaba CEO adds President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Title in Leadership Shuffle

Alibaba Group has reportedly laid off 10,000 employees.

Alibaba Group has named Chairman and CEO Daniel Zhang as its Acting President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, promoted Wu Zeming to CTO and installed Jane Jiang as Chief People Officer. The changes are in line with Alibaba’s policy of regularly shuffling its management team to help the company keep pace with the evolving internet space and better manage its growing team.

Daniel Zhang will take on his new role in addition to his existing responsibilities in a move aimed at enabling current President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Jeff Zhang to focus on his role as Head of the Alibaba DAMO Academy. This unit is focused on exploring technology such as last mile solutions and solving shoppers’ real-life pain points using the metaverse. Jeff also will continue to be responsible for Alibaba’s proprietary chip development team, T-Head, and IoT initiatives.

“Over the past four years, Jeff has led the Alibaba Cloud Intelligence team to deliver outstanding results in technological innovation and industry influence,” said Daniel in an internal email to staff. “As the country enters a new stage of living with COVID and policymakers have given direction to the future development of the platform economy, we are more confident than ever that continued development is the key to solving the challenges we face today.”

Zeming will bring 20 years of experience at Alibaba to the role of CTO, including various senior roles at its financial services affiliate, Ant Group, and time spent working on the 11.11 shopping festival in senior technical capacities. He also will continue to serve as the CTO of Alibaba’s Local Services division.

Jiang, who is one of Alibaba’s 18 original co-founders, will bring her experience as a senior executive in the company’s human resources team to her new role, where she will be responsible for the safety, community-building and satisfaction of employees. She was among the leaders who implemented Alibaba’s hybrid work policies during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been responsible for personnel outside mainland China.
