Ross Stores has engineered a flurry of store openings in September and October: 36 Ross Dress for Less and four dd’s Discounts stores in 17 different states. These brick-and-mortar debuts complete the 90 new locations Ross Stores had planned for its FY 2025, which ends in February 2026. The retailer now operates 2,273 stores under both banners in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.
“This fall, we continued to strengthen our brand presence by opening stores in existing markets and expanding in new markets,” said Richard Lietz, EVP, Property Development at Ross Stores in a statement. “We were excited to add locations in the Midwest as well as the Northeast, with new stores in Michigan, New Jersey and New York, while also increasing our presence in the Sunbelt states. At dd’s, we enhanced our footprint in our core markets of California and Texas.
“Looking ahead, we remain confident in our expansion plans and see plenty of opportunity to grow to at least 2,900 Ross Dress for Less and 700 dd’s Discounts locations over time,” Lietz added.
While the threat of higher inflation and general economic uneasiness has more consumers opting for value-oriented retailers like Ross Stores, others in this category have been conservative with physical store expansion. For example, Dollar General had planned to open 575 stores and remodel 4,250 others during its FY 2025, which ends in January 2026. However, in March 2025 the retailer announced plans to close 141 stores during its Q1.
