Greater Washington, D.C.-area grocery chain Giant Food relaunched its Local Produce Boxes that feature locally sourced items from farms within Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. The boxes are sold exclusively through the retailer’s Giant Delivers service through September 2022 or while supplies last. By offering the weekly service for a second year, Giant Food aims to promote food traceability and transparency while offering locally sourced, healthful products to customers.
The boxes contain a minimum of six items from local farms such as Baugher’s Orchards and Houser Produce Farm of Maryland, Papen Farms and Fifer Orchards of Delaware, and Kirby Farms of Virginia. The types of items provided in the boxes varies depending on availability due to seasonal harvests. Customers may purchase boxes for $20 or receive a $5 discount by purchasing a Giant Delivers Local Meal Bundle featuring a recipe that uses all the included ingredients.
“Giant’s first summer of offering the Local Produce Boxes was a huge success and our customers loved knowing that their produce was sourced locally by the best farms around our area,” said Adenike Olaleye, Senior Manager of Ecommerce Merchandising at Giant Food in a statement. “We’re working with more farmers this year to offer an even wider range of produce options that will keep our customers pleased week after week.”
