Walmart’s VP of Marketing Brian Monahan has abruptly left the retailer. Monahan will be returning to NewCo, a San Francisco-based business-conference firm he founded in 2012.

As VP of Marketing, Monahan was responsible for Walmart’s overall online marketing strategy. After three years with the retail giant, Monahan was “compelled to dive back in and help” the management team at NewCo, he said in a statement. His title at NewCo is Chief Evangelist.

Walmart has been suffering from a steady decline in e-Commerce sales, and has recently terminated more than 100 employees at its Arkansas headquarters.
