Ebay has long been a destination for automotive enthusiasts to purchase not just parts and accessories but also entire pre-owned vehicle. Now the secondhand marketplace wants to make it even easier to buy a car online with the debut of Secure Purchase, a solution that simplifies vehicle transactions.
Secure Purchase manages the payment, financing, registration, ownership transfer and transport involved in vehicle transactions, all through one simplified experience. This streamlining is especially important when you consider that nearly 80% of purchases on Ebay in 2024 involved buyers and sellers in different states, a process that is inherently complicated for products like cars. Now, with Secure Purchase, both the seller and buyer are verified, the paperwork is automated and funds are digital and traceable.
Here’s how it works: At checkout, both the buyer and seller verify their identity and provide basic information about the vehicle being purchased. The buyer can select their financing, transportation, protection and insurance preferences in a few clicks. The seller uploads photos of the title, VIN and odometer reading, all of which are independently verified through national vehicle title databases to ensure accuracy. Then the buyer and seller digitally sign the required documents and transfer funds through the platform to initiate registration and title transfer.
Along with a wide selection of cars and trucks, Ebay offers a range of other services to help automotive shoppers discover what they need, like the Ebay Guaranteed Fit and Tire Installation service.
Ebay isn’t the only online platform looking to drive deeper into the automotive market. Late last year, Amazon announced plans to “modernize automotive retail” through a new partnership Hyundai, while CarMax has been working for years to digitize its network of used car dealerships to combat online-only auto marketplaces like Carvana.
