2026 Store Operations & Experience Benchmark Survey: Retailers Embrace Digital Tools to Nurture In-Store Engagement

When we think about retail technology, we often focus on the architecture needed to support ecommerce, or (inescapably this year) the impact that AI will have on online shopping journeys. And while brick-and-mortar stores have hardly been technology deserts, there’s a newfound enthusiasm for tools to support digital engagement in the store as well as a desire to better tell the brand’s story visually.

These were the top two store design priorities identified by the 100+ retail decision-makers who participated in the 2026 Retail TouchPoints Store Design & Experience Benchmark Survey. Other key findings include:

  • Nearly two-thirds of retailers have deployed digital signage in their stores as retail media networks have become key revenue sources — but 44% of retailers identify integrating new digital media and tech components as a challenge;
  • Hiring and retaining associates also presents a challenge to 42% of retailers, with 38% concerned about employee training and engagement; and
  • Retailers are bullish on expanding and renovating their store fleets: 51% are planning to add up to 50 stores to their footprint by the end of 2028, with another 12% adding 51 to 100 new sites.
