OpenAI is working with Shopify to integrate checkout directly into the shopping experience on ChatGPT, according to the Financial Times, which cited multiple people familiar with the matter.
In April, ChatGPT made significant upgrades to its shopping experience, adding product recommendations, images and reviews, but purchasesare currently completed by linking out to external websites. The new native checkout feature is reportedly still in development, but the Financial Times’ sources said that OpenAI and partners including Shopify have been presenting early versions of the system to brands and discussing financial terms.
OpenAI plans to take a commission on sales completed within ChatGPT, counter to other gen AI shopping platforms like Perplexity’s Shop Like a Pro. In fact, enabling in-app checkouts is in large part a revenue play for OpenAI, according to the Financial Times. The company makes money on subscriptions but also welcomes an immense number of users through its free platform, so the addition of commissioned-checkout capabilities would drive additional revenue, even from users of the free version.
OpenAI is not a public company, so its financials are not regularly disclosed, but the company said earlier this year that its annualized revenue run rate had grown to $10 billion as of June 2025, up from $5.5 billion in December 2024. However, the company also lost approximately $5 billion last year, according to Reuters.
