Macy’s has appointed Richard A. Lennox as its new Chief Marketing Officer, effective Sept. 15, 2016. Lennox will be responsible for the department store’s omnichannel market presence and strategy, including brand, promotional, store, digital and events marketing activity. He will report to Macy’s Inc. President Jeff Gennette.
Lennox’s appointment comes during a difficult time for department store retailers. Macy’s has experienced lackluster sales for six straight quarters, and recently announced it will be pulling the plug on 100 stores.
Lennox joins Macy’s from Toys “R” Us where he served as Senior VP and CMO of the toy retailer. During his tenure, he led the development of brand strategy and efforts to optimize the company’s marketing and digital presence to drive sales growth and customer loyalty.

“Rich Lennox is a significant addition to the Macy’s executive team and we look forward to his contributions as we position the iconic Macy’s brand as even more compelling and relevant for our customers in a changing retail environment,” said Gennette in a statement. “He is a business leader and marketer who believes in the power of big ideas, the strength of teamwork and the ability to drive increased sales through innovation and customer loyalty.”
Lennox succeeds Martine Reardon, who parted ways with the company in April 2016 after more than three decades.
