Walmart has introduced the first of 10 planned “Auto Care Centers (ACCs) of the Future” in Fayetteville, Ark., providing customers with a contactless self-service car care experience via the retailer’s mobile app. After making an appointment, customers put their car in a parking spot near the ACC, then use the app to drop their keys into an assigned locker as well as track and pay for their service.
“We’ve built Auto Care Centers around value and convenience,” said Corey Bender, SVP of Hardlines at Walmart U.S. in a statement. “By adding new technology, we’re giving customers the same trusted service — now with a seamless experience that fits their lifestyles.”
Walmart opened its first ACC in Claremore, Okla. in 1979 and now operates ACCs in 2,582 Walmart Supercenters across the country. In recent years, Walmart has been expanding its automotive offerings: in April 2024 the retailer added eligible tires to its Walmart Marketplace, allowing customers to order tires from marketplace sellers and have them shipped to a local store for installation at an ACC.
And Walmart isn’t alone in looking to innovate in the automotive category for future —Amazon recently added cars to its online offerings via a December 2024 partnership with Hyundai that has since expanded to include used cars.
