Amazon will increase pay for hourly frontline workers in its transportation and fulfillment network by at least $1.50 per hour beginning this month, bringing their average base wage to more than $22 per hour ($29 per hour with the value of benefits factored in). The company also is beefing up employee perks, including greater scheduling flexibility with Unpaid Personal Time that employees accrue as well as free Amazon Prime memberships.
The raises are “part of an annual process where we review our wages and benefits to ensure that they stay competitive — and in many cases industry-leading — and I’m proud to say that this year is our biggest-ever investment in our team,” wrote Udit Madan, VP, Amazon Worldwide Operations in a blog post. Earlier this month, Amazon invested another $2.1 billion in its delivery partner programs, including driver pay rate increases.
Sam’s Club also increased compensation for hourly workers earlier this week, announcing a plan that will see associates’ wages rise faster within their pay range, increasing between 3% and 6% based on years of service. These changes will push average hourly wages at the Walmart subsidiary above $19, with opportunities to earn more based via bonuses.
