In-Store Convenience Sales Rose 1.5% in 2020

In 2020, U.S. convenience stores found brick-and-mortar success despite a tumultuous year: in-store sales rose 1.5%, to $255.6 billion, even though overall industry sales fell 15.4% to $548.2 billion. Additionally, average basket size was up 18.4% compared to 2019.

A weak point was fuel sales, which fell 26.1% to $292.6 billion in 2020 as shoppers cut back on commuting and travel. The average amount of fuel sold per month per store fell 12.4% to 16,807 gallons.
