Fiesta Mart Buys Minyard Supermarkets

FiestaMart logoA brand name that has been part of the Texas supermarket scene since 1932 will be taking its final bow. Houston-based Fiesta Mart is buying up the nine remaining Minyard Food Stores as well as two Sun Fresh Market stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with plans to transition them to the Fiesta Mart banner within the next two months, according to the Dallas Morning News. With the acquisition, Fiesta Mart will operate 70 stores across the state.

“We are excited to welcome Minyard Food Stores to the Fiesta family. This action reinforces the strategic growth plan we forth early last year,” said Fiesta Mart CEO Michael Byars in a statement. “Our entire Fiesta team has worked together to move the brand forward organically, and now through acquisition we continue on our growth plan.”

Byars had worked for Minyard from January 2005 to January 2009, ultimately serving as CEO and President of the company for more than three years. He joined Fiesta in 2015.

In early 2015 Fiesta was purchased by ACON, an international private equity investment firm. ACON is buying the Minyard stores from RLS Supermarkets, which acquired them from the private equity firm Q Investment in 2011. The Minyard family hasn’t had an ownership stake in the chain since 2004.
