Bucking the mini-trend of brands moving away from diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, Ikea has furnished a redesigned resource room for LGBTQ+ students at Howard University. The ribbon-cutting for the new space was held at the school’s Lavender Gala on Oct. 16, an event that honors the contributions of LGBTQ+ students and allies.

“At Ikea, we believe in creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued,” said Ciannie Rodriquez, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Ikea U.S. in a statement. “Our collaboration with Howard University reflects our commitment to fostering inclusive environments and supporting the next generation of leaders.”

Ikea social initiatives in the Washington, D.C. area, where Howard is located, include the Latin American Youth Center, for which the retailer is providing interior design services and furnishings for three youth centers. One of these centers, Stages, offers a safe space for youth who have been displaced after coming out to their families.

The redesigned resource room at Howard features Ikea products, including its Bestå storage units, Kallax shelving and Boaxel wall-mounted systems. The Grönfjäll seating and Borghamn handles add comfort and character, creating a space that is both practical and inviting.
