Take a look at the top five retail headlines of the 2013 holiday season and their respective categories: 

  • Video: Look younger in 2 minutes, with this French secret (Beauty)
  • Perfect Recipe for Buttermilk-Brined Turkey (Home goods/culinary)
  • Parisian Beauty Secret: How to Look Great without Makeup (Beauty)
  • 7 Ways to Make a Bold Statement at Home Using Timeless Blue Shades (Home repair) 
  • The Chicest Dessert for Your Impromptu Dinner Party (Apparel) 

Looking at the above examples, here are a few examples we can gather:

  • If you’re using interactive content, such as video, make that clear!
  •  Incorporate “how to” or “ways to” in headlines. It shows that best practices will be included, which definitely piques interest! 
  • If you’re going to use numbers, stick to the odd ones! Research shows that headlines with odd numbers drive more clicks and eyeballs than even ones. 

  • Have some fun! The final example isn’t literal, per se, but what consumer doesn’t want a look at what’s chic and in style for holiday dinner parties? This is a fun spin on the “how-to” model.
