Dollar General Buys 41 Former Walmart Express Locations

One retailer’s trash is another retailer’s treasure, in Dollar General’s case. The discount retailer has purchased 41 former Walmart Express stores for an undisclosed sum.

Earlier this year, Walmart announced its plans to shutter all 102 of its small-format Express stores, which the retailer had launched  in 2011 as a test. Fast-track to today and Dollar General is scooping up a handful of the stores in an effort to expand its meat and produce offerings. The retailer will rebrand 40 stores as Dollar General locations by Oct. 2016, in addition to opening up one new store.

According to Dollar General, the newly relocated stores will feature a “fresh DG16 layout with additional sales floor square feet.” The retailer also plans to operate the fueling stations in 37 of the 41 locations.

“Dollar General is excited to add these locations to our existing store base,” said Todd Vases, CEO of Dollar General in a statement. “We look forward to the opportunity to better serve our customers in these communities by continuing to provide the convenience and value they expect from Dollar General.”
