Macy’s has debuted a new 2.5 million-square-foot fulfillment center in China Grove, N.C. equipped with state-of-the-art automation and an advanced warehouse management system (WMS). The facility, which will support all product categories, will initially support customer fulfilment and store replenishment for the Macy’s nameplate, with plans to expand to additional Macy’s banners over the next two years.
The new fulfillment center is an element of Macy’s Bold New Chapter initiative, which the retailer announced in February 2024, including a greater focus on small-format stores for Macy’s thriving Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury banners.
“The opening of our China Grove facility is a significant step in modernizing our supply chain and elevating the customer experience across every channel — with faster deliveries, well-stocked stores and seamless service,” said Tom Edwards, COO and CFO of Macy’s Inc. in a statement. “With this investment, we’re building a faster, more efficient and agile network designed to meet our customers’ needs today and in the future.”
Macy’s had first announced plans for the $584 million fulfillment center in April 2022. The China Grove facility is the retailer’s third site to deploy high-performance automation and the first to operate with an advanced WMS.
“Over the past two years, we’ve tested and learned from automation at other sites, refining how it can make our operations more efficient and our colleagues work safer and smarter,” said Sean Barbour, SVP of Supply Chain Operations at Macy’s in a statement.
Macy’s has committed $250,000 to support local organizations in the China Grove community, including the development of an automation training lab at the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College that will give students hands-on access to the same technology used in the new facility.
