More consumers are in the spooky spirit this year, and costumes are flying off the shelves as a result. Up to 67% of consumers said they’d buy a Halloween costume this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s Halloween Consumer Spending Survey, which was conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. The average person will spend $77.52 on this spooky holiday, with overall spending topping off at $7.4 billion.
Halloween celebrants aren’t just going for the traditional pirate, witch and cat costumes, oh no. They’re taking cues from blockbuster films! One Disney darling is freezing out this year’s competition. That’s right, research from SLI Systems indicates that consumers conducted nearly 1.2 million searches online for Frozen-themed costumes! Additionally, the animated film received 122% more search activity than the number-two most popular Halloween costume: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! SLI analyzed more than 80 million e-Commerce consumer searches to determine the most coveted costumes of the year.
Behind Frozen, most consumers were looking for Zombie and Ninja costumes, with both garnering 863,000 searches. Maybe The Walking Dead has something to do with these results? I will admit, having a slew of zombies walking the streets is a lot more reassuring than having faux Ebola nurses roaming around.

Some shoppers are even dressing up that canine and feline friends by purchasing pet costumes! In fact, the NRF forecasted that Americans will spend $350 million on pet costumes this year, a 40% jump from 2010. Although it may seem like a very niche market, there are more than 3,500 products to choose from, according to a blog from Indix, ranging from $10 to $100 in price point.
