Amazon Pharmacy Kiosks to Deliver Prescriptions Right in the Doctor’s Office

Amazon will deploy Amazon Pharmacy Kiosks in select One Medical offices across the greater Los Angeles area beginning in December, giving patients access to their prescriptions within minutes of their medical appointments. Powered by the retailer’s logistics expertise and technology, each kiosk will be stocked with a curated inventory of medications based on each office’s prescribing patterns. Patients who have questions can connect with an Amazon Pharmacy licensed pharmacist for a secure video or phone consultation.

“We know that when patients have to make a separate stop after seeing their doctor, many prescriptions never get filled,” said Hannah McClellan, VP of Operations at Amazon Pharmacy in a statement. “By bringing the pharmacy directly to the point of care, we’re removing a critical barrier and helping patients start their treatment when it matters most — right away.”

Patients will need to create an Amazon Pharmacy account and schedule an appointment at a participating One Medical office (Amazon purchased the primary care provider in July 2022). At checkout in the Amazon app, patients choosing kiosk pickup will receive a QR code to scan at the kiosk. After an Amazon pharmacist reviews the medication, it will be made available for pickup. Via the app, patients can see upfront costs, including available discounts and estimated insurance co-pays.

The kiosks will be deployed in One Medical offices in downtown Los Angeles, West LA, Beverly Hills, Long Beach and West Hollywood, Calif., with expansions to other One Medical offices and other locations to follow.

Amazon has been making major strides in the “medtail” movement since its 2022 acquisition of One Medical, including offering a subscription telehealth service as a reduced-price add-on benefit for Prime members in November 2023, launching a service to help people with chronic conditions access benefits available to them in January 2024, and continually beefing up its pharmacy offerings.
