Target Plans to Hire up to 100K Seasonal Workers, More Than Twice Walmart’s 40,000

Target will add as many as 100,000 seasonal associates to its workforce this holiday season, approximately the same number as in 2021. The retailer is hoping the higher starting wage range it announced in February 2022, $15 to $24 per hour, will streamline its holiday hiring plans despite ongoing labor shortages.

Target’s target is 2.5X the 40,000 employees that Walmart plans to add to its payroll for the holiday sales season. That figure also is significantly lower than the 150,000 workers Walmart planned to hire for the 2021 holiday season. However, Walmart has been pursuing multiple initiatives to attract employees throughout 2022. The holiday hires will work in Walmart stores and customer care positions, and there also are openings for permanent full-time truck driver positions.

Amazon has not yet announced its holiday hiring plans, but it’s likely there will be fewer than the 125,000 warehouse and transportation jobs the retailer announced in September 2021 due to an overall slowdown in ecommerce growth.

Target also is prepping for what many analysts believe will be an extended holiday shopping season. The retailer is kicking off its Target Deal Days “earlier than ever” on Oct. 6-8, and Target also will extend its price match guarantee from Oct. 6 all the way through Dec. 24, 2022.
