Walmart Adds Image Recognition Site to Further Enhance Search Offerings

Walmart is launching its own take on image recognition with TrendGetter, a tool that lets shoppers take photos or screenshots and find similar items on Walmart.com. The software is designed to help shoppers go from inspiration to purchase with minimum fuss.

“We’ve all been there,” said Casey Schlaybaugh, VP of Brand Strategy and Marketing in a statement. “You’re scrolling through your Instagram feed and your favorite influencer is wearing the must-have accessory of the season. Or you’re watching the latest viral TikTok video and you find brag-worthy home décor. Maybe gifting inspiration hits for the hardest person to shop for on your list during your favorite TV show. The problem? You can’t find a shoppable link or any product details, or it’s way out of budget.”

Shoppers can access the tool by visiting TrendGetter.com and uploading an image from their device. They will then be shown matching products available for purchase.

TrendGetter builds upon Walmart’s enhanced search functionality, recently updated to make the online shopping process more personalized. The retail giant also added styling features to help shoppers develop a complete look, and a Choose Your Own Model option that allows customers to see how products will look on their own bodies.

Image recognition is an area of growing interest for retailers. Product attributes platform Lily AI closed a $25 million Series B financing round in August 2022 that will help fuel development in this area. Bloomingdale’s, Gap, Macy’s and ThredUP are among Lily AI’s current customers.
