Boutique marketplace Jane.com has hired David John Smith to serve as the company’s new CTO as it moves forward with its transformation from a three-day flash-deal platform into an evergreen selling model. Smith’s appointment follows Jane’s $40 million investment from Tritium Partners, as the marketplace marks $1 billion in sales to date.

As home to more than 2,000 small businesses, many of which are women- and minority-owned, Jane is positioning itself to become a destination for a more customer-focused shopping experience. Under Smith’s guidance, Jane will help its sellers promote their brands through new tools and innovative features.

Over the course of his nearly 20-year career in developing technology solutions and leading software engineering teams, Smith has established strong roots in the fashion category. His most recent role was as CTO at luxury reseller Fashionphile. Prior to that role, Smith served as the VP of Technology at Nordstrom and worked with TechStyle Fashion Group.

“As we prepare for our next stage of growth at Jane, we are delighted to welcome David to our executive team,” said Joana McKenna, CEO of Jane in a statement. “David’s extensive experience leading technology and engineering teams in the ecommerce and fashion space make him ideally suited to lead Jane’s technology transformation into a full-fledged third-party marketplace.”
