Sears Expands Teradata Solutions

Sears Holdings has upgraded its big data analytic capabilities with the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse Platform 6690, a new hybrid storage-based platform designed for expanded configuration flexibility and balance of both solid state and hard disk drives, and offers faster time to market. Sears also added the Teradata Active Data Warehouse Private Cloud with Elastic Performance on Demand, for on-demand business analytics. This capability is designed for more flexible, economic data-crunching during surges in business activity, such as those occurring during holiday shopping.

The new platforms “will help Sears lead customer based innovation through integrated retail and support our membership program, Shop Your Way Rewards,” said Oliver Ratzesberger, VP of Information Analytics and Innovation at Sears Holdings, in a Teradata press release. “By combining previously separated databases and data marts onto a single virtualized big data platform we eliminate the need to maintain multiple copies and data feeds, thereby reducing time to market as well as TCO.”

Foot Locker Prepares for the Peak Hiring Season With PeopleAnswers HR Software

Foot Locker, Inc., has announced that it successfully completed a pilot of the PeopleAnswers HR solution in 600 of its stores. In advance of the upcoming peak hiring season, the chain plans to implement the software in all 2,500 stores across the U.S., including Foot Locker, Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports and Footaction.

Foot Locker will use the pre-employment screening and employee selection software to create a consistent, automated process to help store managers improve the quality of hiring decisions, employee retention, productivity and customer service. In addition, Foot Locker will use the, web-based PeopleAnswers assessment tool to pre-screen job candidates who share many of the same behaviors. The PeopleAnswers solution is integrated with the Foot Locker applicant tracking system to assist in the employee recruiting process, and includes a guide for interview content and employee development.

World Kitchen Implements Workplace Cloud-Based WFM Solution

World Kitchen, a marketer of houseware products sold under brand names such as CorningWare, Pyrex, Corelle, Revere, EKCO, Baker’s Secret and others, has selected the Workplace Online workforce management (WFM) solution from Workplace to help control labor costs and improve customer service. The cloud-based solution is designed to give companies a competitive advantage through these controlled costs and higher quality service. The solution is capable of going live at World Kitchen by the 2012 holiday season, according to a Workplace press release.

World Kitchen employs approximately 2,800 people, has major manufacturing and distribution operations around the globe, and sells products through multiple channels. The company sought a WFM tool that it could “rapidly implement,” said Michael Chester, VP Store Operations at World Kitchen, “so that we could maximize sales and improve our reputation for great customer services throughout the busy 2012 Christmas holiday season.”

QuantiSense Partners With Teradata To Improve Business Operations With Advanced Analytics

QuantiSense today announced a partnership with Teradata Corporation to help retailers benefit from the QuantiSense Decision Orchestration Platform, integrated directly into the Teradata Database.

Retailers such as The Gap, Hallmark Cards and Hudson’s Bay currently are using the combined QuantiSense and Teradata solution. Results to date include decreased stock-outs, improved inventory productivity and fewer markdowns, resulting in a boost in overall sales, QuantiSense reported in a company press release.

RetailNext Reports Big Data Milestone

The collection and application of Big Data is significantly impacting IT spending and retail strategies. Gartner predicts that Big Data will drive $34 billion of IT spending in 2013. On the heels of that announcement, RetailNext announced that the company reached its own milestone by collecting more than 75 petabytes of raw data each year.

Retailers are using insights collected from Big Data to optimize staffing, improve store layouts and increase same-store sales. Recently, American Apparel boosted same-store sales more than 30% and reduced theft by one seventh, RetailNext reported in a press release.
